For local settings, find a copy of Phil Rubenzer’s Midwest Irish Session Tunes or consult thesession.org for the basics.  I usually use the session to track down CDs that have tunes I’m learning on rather than learn by (or solely) by the written music.  It’s good to get a version of it that you can listen to (ALOT!) to properly get the tune in your head.
